WRITE AS RAIN: When I’m writing, I’m so busy trying to get the action going I forget to set the scene; weather, temperature, what they need to wear, etc. I highlight in blue on the second draft; how I have described the scene at each scene change. I must ensure my reader can taste, touch, see, hear, smell, and sense in every way possible. It’s always a work in progress.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, ‘The Rainy Day. ‘
My life is cold, dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the mouldering Past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
And the days are dark and dreary.
Okay, Henry, let me practice:
The Past clung to the evergreens like raindrops, afraid of falling, disappearing into the earth.
The elderly woman’s dark leathery skin sagged like a closed beach umbrella waiting for the sun.
